What causes low back pain?

Low back pain is a common concern and can be caused by a number of factors.

If you suffer from pain in your lower back, you are not alone. The issue is very common and many people experience the problem at some point in their lives. Low back pain can be caused by a number of factors, including injuries, poor form when exercising or lifting heavy objects, and certain health issues like arthritis, sciatica and herniated discs. Read on to find out more about the possible causes of low back pain, and what treatments are available…

What are the possible causes?

Low back pain can be caused by a number of factors. These include:

Injuries

Often, the muscles and ligaments located in the back can tear as a result of too much activity. Common symptoms of a strain include pain, stiffness and muscle spasms.

Disc injuries are also a common issue that affect the lower back. A herniated disc occurs when the cartilage around the disc presses against the spinal cord, causing compression of the root nerve. This type of issue often happens as a result of lifting a very heavy object, or twisting the back.

Diseases

Low back pain can also be caused by certain conditions. Sciatica can occur in the case of a herniated disc pressing against the sciatic nerve. Because the sciatic nerve links the spine to the legs, the condition can cause pain in the legs and feet as well as the back.

Spinal stenosis can also cause considerable back pain. The condition occurs when the spinal column narrows and puts pressure on the spinal cord and nerves.

Other conditions that can lead to low back pain include arthritis, fibromyalgia and scoliosis. Pregnancy can also cause back pain as a result of excess weight and pressure.

How is low back pain treated?

There are a number of ways in which low back pain can be treated. At Modern Chiropractic & Pain Relief, we offer laser therapy, which can be an effective solution for musculoskeletal pain, back pain and spinal issues, sciatica and strains. During laser therapy, specific wavelengths of light are used to interact with tissue. This deep, penetrating energy brings about some significant physiological changes and helps to reduce pain and inflammation, while boosting circulation at the site of injury.

We also offer spinal decompression, which is a non-surgical procedure for the treatment of bulging and herniated discs, spinal stenosis and non-specified mechanical low back pain. During spinal decompression therapy, the pressure inside the discs is reduced as the injured spinal segments are gently separated. This process allows fluids, nutrients and oxygen to flow back into the discs and accelerates their repair.

Other possible solutions for low back pain include chiropractic treatments, which help to restore spinal function with the help of chiropractic adjustments. During chiropractic treatment, asymmetries in the body are corrected, which helps to minimize spinal degeneration, improve overall neurological dysfunction and enhance systemic health.
